刚来加拿大工作那会儿,有天办公室出了个小事故。

同事打印一份重要材料时,发现有人把最终版本覆盖掉了。

他盯着电脑突然来了一句:

“Mike is going to hit the roof when he sees this.”
“Mike看到这个肯定要hit the roof了。”

我听完第一反应:撞房顶?

我下意识抬头看了一眼办公室天花板。

挺高的啊……

Mike虽然个子高,也不至于撞得到吧?

我还认真问同事:

“Why would he hit the roof?”
“他为什么要撞房顶?”

同事愣了两秒,然后笑得差点把咖啡喷出来。

“No, no. I mean he’ll be REALLY angry.”
“不是撞房顶,我是说他会气炸。”

我刚想装作自己其实知道,Mike正好推门进来了。

我脑子一抽,居然脱口而出:

“Mike, watch your head.”
“Mike,小心你的头。”

整个办公室瞬间安静。

Mike抬头看了看天花板,又看了看我:

“My head?”
“我的头?”

旁边同事已经趴桌上笑了。

后来我才彻底记住,hit the roof不是“撞到屋顶”,而是形容一个人突然大发雷霆、气到爆炸。

比如:

“My dad will hit the roof if he sees the repair bill.”
“我爸看到维修账单肯定会大发雷霆。”

现在每次听到hit the roof,我还是会条件反射抬头看一下天花板。
