周末去加拿大朋友家参加BBQ。

吃到一半,朋友Mike突然说:
“You got the wrong end of the stick.”
“你抓错棍子的一头了。”

我当时整个人停了两秒。

因为他前几分钟刚在后院收拾烤架,旁边还真的放着几根烧烤用的木棍。

我下意识往地上看了一圈:
“Which stick?”
“哪根棍子?”

Mike愣了:
“What stick?”
“什么棍子?”

我还特别认真地指着墙边:
“The one you said I got the wrong end of.”
“你刚才说我抓错一头的那根啊。”

旁边几个加拿大朋友突然全笑了。

我完全不知道他们在笑什么。

事情其实是这样的。

刚才我听见Mike说:
“Jason isn’t coming tonight.”

我以为Jason临时放大家鸽子,就顺口说:
“He probably doesn’t want to hang out with us.”
“他大概是不想跟我们玩了吧。”

Mike赶紧摆手:
“No, no. You got the wrong end of the stick.”
“不是不是,你完全理解错了。”

原来Jason不是不想来。

是他老婆突然肚子痛,他陪她去了急诊。

我这才反应过来:
这里的stick根本没有棍子。

不是“抓错棍子的一端”。

而是:
把事情理解错了,
而且往往还是“误会得有点离谱”。

后来Mike还笑着补了一刀:
“You literally got the wrong end of the stick about ‘the wrong end of the stick.’”
“你连‘理解错了’这句话都理解错了。”

全桌又笑了一遍。

我只能默默拿起手里的烤玉米:
“Okay… now I get it.”
“好吧……这次我真懂了。”
