加拿大办公室里,同事问我“get the picture?”,我真去找照片了……

刚到加拿大工作那阵,我最怕的不是开会,是别人突然冒出一句我“每个单词都认识”的英语。
有次主管在会议室给我讲一个新流程。
他说了一大串:
“So the client sends the form, we review it, then Finance approves it. You get the picture?”
“客户先交表格,我们审核,然后财务批准。You get the picture?”
我愣了一下。
picture?
照片?
我脑子里马上开始高速搜索:
刚才邮件里有附件吗?
流程图算不算picture?
是不是漏发了一张截图给我?
我特别认真地回答:
“No, I don’t think I got the picture.”
“没有,我觉得我没收到那张照片。”
主管停了两秒。
旁边同事也停了两秒。
然后主管问:
“What picture?”
“什么照片?”
我更懵了:
“The picture you just mentioned.”
“就你刚才说的那张啊。”
同事直接笑出了声。
主管这才反应过来,笑着摆手:
“Oh! I mean, do you understand the situation?”
“哦!我是问,你明白现在是什么情况了吗?”
那一瞬间,我终于get the picture了。
原来“get the picture”很多时候根本不是“拿到照片”,而是:
明白了、了解大概情况、听懂事情是怎么回事了。
比如同事跟你解释:
“We’re short-staffed, the deadline is Friday, and the client keeps changing things. You get the picture.”
意思就是:
“我们人手不够,周五截止,客户还一直改需求。你应该明白现在什么状况了吧。”
最尴尬的是,第二天主管又问我:
“You get the picture?”
我条件反射想说“Yes, I got it.”
结果旁边那个昨天笑我的同事马上补了一句:
“No photos required.”
“不需要照片。”
全办公室又笑了。
现在每次听到get the picture,我脑子里还是会闪过一张不存在的照片。
