加拿大办公室午休,同事说“far and away”,我以为他让我走远点……

午休时,办公室几个人在聊附近哪家汉堡最好吃。
同事Mike咬了一口汉堡,很认真地说:
“This is far and away the best burger in the city.”
“这家绝对是全城最好吃的汉堡,领先其他家一大截。”
我当时只听见了两个词:
far,远。
away,走开。
脑子瞬间自动翻译成:
“这个汉堡……又远又要走?”
我愣了两秒,问他:
“Far away? Is the restaurant very far from here?”
“很远吗?这家店离这里很远?”
Mike停下吃薯条的手,看着我:
“No, no. I mean it’s far and away the best.”
“不是,我是说它明显是最好的。”
我还是没完全懂。
于是又补了一句:
“So… we don’t need to go far away?”
“所以……我们不用走很远?”
旁边同事直接笑了。
有人指着我手里的汉堡说:
“You’re already eating it.”
“你都已经在吃了。”
那一刻我才反应过来:
far and away根本不是“远和走”,也不是far away“很远”。
它放在最高级前面,经常是在加强语气。
far and away the best
就是“好得多”“毫无疑问是最好的”。
比如:
“She is far and away the strongest candidate.”
“她明显是最强的候选人。”
“The new office is far and away better than the old one.”
“新办公室比原来那个好太多了。”
最尴尬的是,下午Mike路过我工位,还故意问:
“Jon, is your desk far and away from the kitchen?”
“你的工位是不是离厨房‘又远又走’啊?”
全办公室又笑了一遍。
现在只要听见far and away,我脑子里还是会先出现一个人背着包越走越远……
