周一早上在加拿大办公室茶水间,同事一边倒咖啡一边说:

“Did you feel the earthquake last night?”
“你昨晚感觉到 earthquake 了吗?”

我端着杯子愣了两秒。

earth 是“地球”,quake 是“晃动”。
我脑子里瞬间翻译成:地球晃了。

于是我非常认真地问:

“Was it everywhere?”
“是到处都在晃吗?”

同事停下倒咖啡:“Everywhere?”

我还怕他没听懂,继续补了一句:

“Like… did people in China feel it too?”
“比如……中国那边的人也感觉到了吗?”

旁边正在拿牛奶的同事直接笑出声。

“No, no. It was just a small earthquake near here.”
“不是不是,就是附近发生了一个小地震。”

我当场卡住。

所以你们说的 earthquake,不是“整个 Earth 开始 quake”?

同事笑着说:

“Well, technically the earth did move.”
“严格来说,地面确实动了。”

很好,这句话成功保住了我最后一点面子。

后来才彻底记住,earthquake 就是一个完整的词:地震。

新闻里常见:
“A 4.2-magnitude earthquake was reported.”
“发生了4.2级地震。”

还可以问:
“Did you feel the earthquake?”
“你感觉到刚才的地震了吗?”

学英语最可怕的,有时候不是单词不认识,而是每个单词都认识,然后自己脑补出了一个全球灾难片。
