刚来加拿大工作那年,公司年底办 Christmas Party。

下午同事提醒我:
“People get dressed to the nines for this party.”
“大家参加这个聚会都会 dressed to the nines。”

我听完第一反应是:穿到九?

我看了一眼邀请函,晚宴六点开始。
心里还纳闷:难道意思是六点先随便穿,九点之前再换正式一点?

于是我穿着平时上班的衬衫和休闲裤去了,西装还很聪明地留在车里。

结果一推开酒店宴会厅的门,我人直接定住了。

男同事西装领带,女同事礼服高跟鞋。
连平时每天穿 hoodie 的程序员,都像刚从婚礼现场走出来。

同事看到我:
“Jon, where’s your suit?”
“Jon,你西装呢?”

我特别认真地说:
“It’s in my car. I thought we dress to nine.”
“在车里啊,我以为九点之前再换。”

桌上安静了两秒。

旁边一个同事差点把饮料喷出来:
“No! Dressed to the nines means dressed really fancy!”
“不是!Dressed to the nines 是盛装打扮、穿得特别正式!”

我这才明白,nine 跟九点根本没关系。

如果别人说:
“She was dressed to the nines at the wedding.”
不是说她“穿到了九点”,而是说她在婚礼上打扮得非常漂亮、非常讲究。

最尴尬的是,第二周那个同事穿着运动裤来上班。

我看了他一眼:
“Not dressed to the nines today?”

全办公室又笑了。
