加拿大办公室找同事:老板说他“down in the dumps”,我真跑去垃圾房了……

周一早上,我在加拿大公司刚坐下,老板突然问我:
“Have you seen Kevin? He’s been down in the dumps lately.”
“你看到Kevin了吗?他最近一直down in the dumps。”
我脑子里只抓住了两个词:down,dumps。
Dump不是垃圾场吗?
我瞬间脑补:Kevin是不是去楼下倒垃圾了?
我还特别认真地回答:
“I’ll go check downstairs.”
“我下楼看看。”
老板愣了一下:
“Downstairs?”
我已经拎着咖啡冲进电梯了。
公司地下停车场旁边正好有垃圾房,我推门进去,里面几个物业工作人员正在搬纸箱。
我探头问:
“Excuse me, have you seen Kevin?”
“不好意思,你们看到Kevin了吗?”
对方一脸迷茫:
“Kevin who?”
我正准备描述Kevin长什么样,手机响了。
同事Lisa发消息:
“Where are you? Kevin’s at his desk.”
“你在哪?Kevin就在工位上啊。”
我回到办公室,Kevin正坐在电脑前,老板笑得快不行了。
我小声问:
“I thought you were… down in the dumps.”
“我以为你在……垃圾堆那边。”
Kevin先愣了两秒,然后直接笑出声:
“Oh man, that means I’ve been feeling sad.”
“哥们儿,那是说我最近心情很低落。”
我这才明白,down in the dumps根本不是“在垃圾堆里”,而是“情绪低落、很沮丧”。
比如:
“She’s been down in the dumps since she failed the exam.”
她考试没过以后一直很沮丧。
最尴尬的是,老板后来还补了一刀:
“At least now we know where to find you when you’re down in the dumps.”
“至少以后你心情不好,我们知道去哪儿找你了。”
学英语最怕的不是没听懂,是每个单词都听懂了,然后行动得特别快。
