上周在加拿大公司开项目会,我们提了一个新方案,经理听完明显不太满意。

散会前,同事Mike小声跟我说:
“Don’t worry. He’ll come round.”
“别担心,他会come round的。”

我脑子里立刻拆词:come=过来,round=转一圈。

刚好经理背对着我们收电脑,我就盯着他看,心想:他什么时候“转过来”?

过了几秒,我还问Mike:
“Why does he need to turn around?”
“他为什么要转过来?”

Mike愣住:“Turn around?”

我指了指经理:
“You said he would come round.”
“你不是说他会转过来吗?”

Mike直接笑出声,旁边两个同事也看了过来。

更社死的是,经理正好听见了,真的转过身问:
“Did you need me?”
“你找我?”

我赶紧摆手:“No, no! I was just waiting for you to… come round.”

全桌安静两秒,然后彻底笑翻。

Mike后来才告诉我,这里的come round不是“身体转过来”,而是“慢慢改变想法、被说服”。

“He doesn’t like the idea now, but he may come round.”
“他现在不喜欢这个主意,但以后可能会接受。”

它也可以表示“苏醒”:
“She fainted, but she came round quickly.”
“她晕过去了,但很快醒了。”

还可以表示“来访”:
“Come round for coffee sometime.”
“有空过来喝咖啡。”

以前我背单词,总觉得round就是“圆、转圈”。

现在只要有人说come round,我脑子里还是会先出现一个领导缓缓转身的画面……
