上周加拿大办公室开项目复盘会,本来气氛还挺正常。

后来两个同事因为预算问题争起来了。经理随口对Mike说:
“Maybe that's why your last project failed too.”
“可能这就是你上个项目也失败的原因吧。”

会议室一下安静了。

散会后,旁边的Sarah小声说:
“Wow, that was below the belt.”
“哇,刚才那话真是below the belt。”

我脑子瞬间卡住。

Below the belt?
皮带下面?

我下意识朝经理腰下面瞄了一眼,心想:裤子怎么了?拉链没拉?衬衫露出来了?

Sarah发现我一直往那边看,问:
“What are you looking at?”
“你在看什么?”

我还特别认真:
“His belt looks fine to me.”
“我觉得他的皮带没什么问题啊。”

她愣了两秒,然后直接笑到扶墙:
“No! I mean his comment was unfair and too personal.”
“不是!我是说他刚才那句话太不公平,而且有点人身攻击了。”

我这才反应过来。

原来below the belt来自拳击——腰带以下属于不能攻击的位置。
所以说某句话或某种做法“below the belt”,就是指太过分、不公平,甚至专门往别人痛处上戳。

比如:
“Bringing up his divorce was below the belt.”
“拿他的离婚来说事,真的太伤人了。”

最社死的是,第二天Mike见到我还笑着问:
“So… is my belt okay today?”
“所以……我今天皮带还好吗?”

我现在听到below the belt,再也不敢低头了。
