加拿大办公室周一开会,经理突然问我:“So, do you actually want to take over this project?”
所以,你到底想不想接这个项目?

我有点紧张,开始绕:“Well… I think the project is interesting, and the team is great, and maybe after we discuss the timeline…”
我觉得项目挺好的,团队也不错,然后时间安排我们可以再讨论……

旁边同事听了半天,突然笑着说:“Jon, stop beating around the bush.”
Jon,别一直 beating around the bush 了。

我脑子瞬间卡住。

Beat 是“打”,bush 是“树丛”。
我下意识往会议室窗外看了一眼,外面正好有一排灌木。

我一脸认真:“What bush?”
“什么树丛?”

会议室安静两秒。

同事直接笑喷:“No, no! I mean just tell us directly!”
“不不不!我是说你直接讲就行!”

经理也笑了:“Exactly. Do you want the project or not?”
“对,所以你到底想不想接?”

我赶紧说:“Yes. I want it.”
“想,我接。”

经理点头:“See? That was easy.”
“看吧,这不就简单了。”

后来我才知道,beating around the bush 跟真的“围着树丛打”完全没关系。

它就是一个特别常见的口语:拐弯抹角、不直接说重点。
比如别人铺垫五分钟还不说正事,你就可能听到:“Stop beating around the bush.”

最尴尬的是,那天会议结束后,同事经过窗边那排灌木,还故意问我:“Should we beat those bushes now?”
要不要现在去打那几棵树?

全办公室又笑了一轮。
