在加拿大办公室,有次我想问经理一个很现实的问题:年底有没有可能加薪。

但我又不好意思直接问,就先绕了一大圈。

我说:
“I really enjoy working here.”
“我真的很喜欢在这里工作。”

然后又补一句:
“I’ve taken on quite a few extra tasks lately.”
“我最近也多做了不少工作。”

经理听着点点头。

我继续:
“And everything is getting more expensive these days…”
“而且现在什么东西都越来越贵……”

说到这里,我还故意停了一下,等他自己领悟。

结果他喝了口咖啡,笑着说:

“Okay, don’t beat about the bush. What do you want to ask?”
“好了,别兜圈子了。你到底想问什么?”

我脑子里瞬间只剩一句:

beat about the bush?

敲灌木丛?

我下意识往办公室窗外看了一眼。

外面刚好真的有一排灌木。

我一脸认真地问:
“Which bush?”
“哪一丛?”

经理愣了两秒。

旁边正在喝水的同事直接呛到了。

经理憋着笑说:
“No, no. ‘Beat about the bush’ means you’re avoiding the main point.”
“不不,这句话是说你一直绕着重点说。”

我这才反应过来。

原来他不是嫌我破坏公司绿化。

而是在提醒我:有话直说。

我只好硬着头皮说:
“Okay… I wanted to ask if there might be a salary adjustment this year.”
“好吧……我其实想问,今年有没有可能调薪。”

没想到经理反而笑了:

“See? That was much easier.”
“你看,这样说简单多了。”

更尴尬的是,下午那个同事路过我座位,还指着窗外的灌木问:

“Need any help beating that bush?”
“需要帮你敲那片灌木吗?”

我现在看到公司门口的绿化带,都能自动想起这句话。

所以以后别人说:
“Stop beating about the bush.”

千万别找棍子。

人家的意思其实是:
别旁敲侧击了,别兜圈子了,直接说重点。

不过话说回来,如果在加拿大办公室想问加薪,你们会直接开口,还是也会先“beat about the bush”一下?
