加拿大办公室里,同事说“everything is at stake”,我竟然开始找那根“桩”……

周一早上,加拿大办公室临时开会。
我们一个系统下午要上线,经理脸色很严肃:
“We need to fix this before noon. The whole project is at stake.”
“我们必须中午前解决,整个项目都 at stake。”
我听到 stake,脑子里立刻跳出一个画面:
木桩、帐篷、院子里钉进地面的那种桩。
我甚至下意识往会议室窗外看了一眼。
旁边同事发现了:
“What are you looking at?”
“你在看什么?”
我小声问:
“Sorry… what is on the stake?”
“不好意思……什么东西在桩上?”
会议室安静了两秒。
同事愣了一下,突然笑出声:
“No, no. Nothing is literally on a stake.”
“不不,没有东西真的在桩上。”
我还没反应过来,经理继续说:
“If we miss today’s deadline, we could lose the client.”
“如果错过今天的截止时间,我们可能会失去客户。”
这时我才突然明白。
原来 at stake 不是“在桩上”,而是“处于危险中、成败攸关”。
The whole project is at stake.
意思就是:
“整个项目的成败都悬在这里了。”
后来我发现北美职场里这句话还挺常见。
“There’s a lot of money at stake.”
“这里牵涉到很多钱,风险很大。”
“His job is at stake.”
“他的工作可能保不住了。”
最尴尬的是,当天下午系统顺利上线,同事路过我工位,还故意问:
“So… did you find the stake?”
“所以……你找到那根桩了吗?”
我只能笑着说:
“Yes. Apparently it was holding the whole project.”
“找到了,原来整个项目都拴在上面。”
现在看到 at stake,我脑子里还是会先闪过那根木桩。
