加拿大办公室开会,同事说“ahead of time”,我提前一小时坐进了别人的会议……

刚到加拿大工作时,下午2点有个部门会议。
同事临走前提醒我:
“Let’s get there ahead of time.”
“我们ahead of time到那里吧。”
我一听,脑子自动翻译成:
“走在时间前面。”
我心想,北美人开会这么卷?
2点的会,难道1点就得坐进去?
于是1点整,我抱着电脑走进会议室。
里面已经坐了六个人。
我还暗自佩服:
加拿大同事果然都喜欢“ahead of time”。
一个大叔抬头问:
“Are you here for the budget meeting?”
“你也是来参加预算会议的?”
我愣了一下:
“No… our meeting is at two.”
“不是……我们的会是两点。”
全屋突然安静。
旁边的人看了一眼表:
“That’s an hour from now.”
“那还有一个小时啊。”
我很认真地解释:
“But I was told to come ahead of time.”
“可同事让我ahead of time来啊。”
大叔憋了两秒,笑了:
“Well… you’re definitely ahead of time.”
“嗯……你这确实够提前的。”
我当场抱着电脑撤退。
后来才知道,ahead of time就是“提前、事先”,不是让你跟时间赛跑,更不是越早越好。
“Please send me the report ahead of time.”
就是“请提前把报告发给我”。
“Let’s arrive ahead of time.”
就是“咱们早点到”。
现在每次有人跟我说ahead of time,我脑子里还是会闪过那间完全不属于我的预算会议室。
